When over a year ago I created an account in the IVHQ website to volunteer abroad, my possible trip to Africa seemed far away and unobtainable.
When I payed my registration fee it felt a bit more real and after booking my flights it felt even more real.
Now, with everything ready to go and only a few days until my departure, the anxiety has passed and my heart is filled with excitement.
For a month I’ll be leaving the comfort of home and my ‘job’ as a blogger and substitute them with a home away from home, in a volunteer house and a job in an orphanage. I’ll be leaving the busy streets of Portugal and the calm transportation for the streets of Tanzania and the not so calm dala dala rides.
At this point I have no idea what to expect and can only board my plane with an open mind and a heart filled with love for a beautiful country.
For the first time, I’m going to fully experience a different culture by using the transportation, learning the language, eating the food and interacting with the locals.
I’m beyond excited to meet new people, see new things and join a project to help and hopefully make someone happy.
Leaving your comfort zone is never easy and leaving my friends and family behind will be hard, but I’m sure it’s going to be worth it.
Right now, I have no idea what will happen, what I’ll see, what the food will taste like, but as I mentioned above all I can do is have an open mind.
I hope I can grow as a person and really start appreciating the little things in life, I hope I can make new friends and connect with people and I hope I see amazing things and places.
I’ll check back in a month and tell you if my expectations met the reality…
